Aldershot Swim Camp 2004

Approximately 90 children attended this years swim camp at Aldershot during the Easter holidays.
The 3 day event, held at the well equiped Garrison 50m pool, was run by First 4 Sports with coaches Graham Pople and our Mandy Osman working the children hard. There were 2 x pool sessions and an hours ‘dry’ training each day. Robin Broomfield went along to help, with the 11 swimmers from Hamble Aquatics, and was suitably impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of the coaches and swimmers. All of the children enjoyed the 3 days training and the evenings at nearby Wandsworth College where we were accommodated.
This was Lucy Hirsts account of the activities -
Aldershot Camp lasted for 3 days and 2 nights. On the first day we had an early start. Many of us were bleary eyed and tired but that had no influence on Graham who started us training immediately. The day came as a bit of a shock to me, and I’m sure some of the others, as the 1½ hour training session full of exhausting sets began. At least it was followed by lunch, which I must say was lovely. After lunch came an hour of land training run by Ian, an athletics coach, he was great and could show us everything he wanted us to do. This was followed by another hour of swimming, which by this time was pretty hard going. Tuesday night was spent at the boarding school (our accommodation) where we just chilled out and settled in. The next day completely changed my opinion of Graham, I realized that his bark was worse than his bite and as I settled in to the training routine for the last 2 days. In the evening some of us we went to the cinema, taking Robin to see Scooby Doo. I really really enjoyed myself, the staff were lovely and the rooms in the accommodation were great. The food was yummy! The camp was a great experience and enjoyed by all of us. I’m sure that we have improved our swimming because of it.

Outstanding among the Hamble youngsters was Phil Wilson who swam an impressive 25m fly getting 1st place in a time of 17:91 seconds.
Another promising youngster was Hannah Geal who came 2nd in the under 11 yrs, 50m Freestyle and swam well in several relays. He then went on to do the same swim in his own age group in a faster time of 48.64 gaining 2nd place.
The under 11 boys consisting of Joe Bampton, Phil Wilson, Matt Wilson and Neil Redman did well in the both the medley and freestyle relays coming first in both races. The under 14yrs girls medley team consisting of Jo Jeffcoate, Sammi Windebank, Danni King and Hannah Nelson also gained maxim points for their team.

HAMBLE AQUATICS GIVE THEIR BEST

Having reached the top round of the Premiership League the competition was tough for Hamble Aquatics, a small club in comparison with the other four clubs competing.
In the girls U/12 50m breaststroke Esther Evans came 1st in a time of 45.57,
Fiona Caroll put up a good fight in the girls U/13 50m freestyle gaining 2nd place just behind Winchester City Penguins in a time of 33.10.
In the boys 9yrs Medley Relay 4x1 Joe Bampton, George Pratt, Neil Redman and Matt Wilson swam very well claiming 2nd place in a time of 1.34.67.
Despite coming 5th the girls U/11 freestyle relay was swum brilliantly by Daisy Griggs, Phoebe Geal, Tori Walker and Hannah Geal, well done girls.
Stephen Feltham held off Harts to gain 3rd place in the boys U/13 50m backstroke in a time of 41.45.
Neil Redman gained 2nd place in the boys U/11 50m breaststroke in a time of 51.33 just behind Bracknell.
In the boys U/11 50m freestyle Phil Wilson just gained 1st place in front of Harts in a time of 36.65.
Everyone swam their best on a day when most of Southampton were in Cardiff especially Phoebe Geal, Tori Walker, Daisy Griggs, Hannah Geal and Neil Redman who all swam up 2 years.
Mandy Osman said she was pleased with the results, as getting into the top round of the Premier League was great.
Final results at Fleet - 1st Bracknell 176 points
2nd Winchester City Penguins 153 Points
3rd Hart 117 Points
4th Havant & Waterlooville 107 points

Novice gala held on 3rd May 2003, hosted by Winchester Penguins

Teams competing and their scores were:-
Winchester Penguins White 103, Winchester Penguins Black 141, Gosport 228, Havant & Waterlooville 162 and Hamble Aquatics 191 points.
Well done yet again to Hamble for another brilliant performance and getting 2nd place.
All the swimmers swam so well most received PB’s too many to mention individually, so well done to you all.
The 9yrs freestyle boys relay team were a force to be reckoned with, they managed their race in a time of 118.39 which was only beaten by the 12/13 yrs relay team, so well done to George, Neil, Nick and Joe.
The girl/boy 9yrs dogpaddle relay was a close race with Emma, Joe and Becky keeping up the pressure and Neil taking the lead at the last minute to take 1st place.
Another fun race the girl/boy mixed pushball squadron saw eight of our swimmers use novel ways of getting the ball down the pool to take second place.
A special mention for James Broomfield who didn’t want to do 25m butterfly, because he said he couldn’t do it but surprised himself by coming a very close second. Well done James.
A big thanks to all our swimmers, most of which didn’t get much rest between swims, no sooner had they got out of the pool one end they were back on the blocks at the other.

NEW MILTON TROPHY GALA, 1ST MARCH 2003

HAMBLE AQUATICS PROVE ONCE AGAIN THAT ‘SIZE DOESN’T MATTER’.
Despite losing several older age group swimmers to other commitments the team gave their all in an attempt to defend the trophy they won last year. The final outcome was always in question as the lead passed regularly between Bournemouth and Hamble. There were several outstanding performances and personal bests achieved by many of these young swimmers. The swims of the evening were Stephen Feltham in the boys 11 & under 50m Backstroke winning time of 42.53, 5 seconds clear of his rivals and Samantha Windebank in the girls 12 & under 50m backstroke winning by nearly 7 seconds in a time of 37.56 seconds. Final result of the evening; 1st Bournemouth 212 pts, 2nd Hamble Aquatics 181 pts, 3rd Andover 158 pts, 4th New Milton 119 pts, and 5th Romsey & Totton 93 pts.

Any of you staff/committee members out there might like to think if any other pages are required - eg a Trainer's tips page - do staff/committee members want their own email address on the site eg Club Secretary@Hamble Aquatics can be automatically directed to Helen's personal email address.
Just a thought!
